The Charm of the Flutes SEASON CONCERT VII Thu 5.11. at 18:30 Madetoja Hall Rumon Gamba conductor Carlotta Petri piccolo Oulu Sinfonia Program: Carl Nielsen: Pan and Syrinx, Op. 49, Pastoral scene for orchestra Kalevi Aho: Concerto for Piccolo and Orchestra (World Premiere) --- Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 in F Major, Op. 68, "Pastoral" Musicians worldwide have long sought Kalevi Aho's concertos for their instruments -- more than forty have been composed to date. Tonight, Oulu Sinfonia's piccolo player Carlotta Petri has the honour of giving the world premiere of a concerto originally created as a bespoke work. The melancholic pan flute was born when the forest god Pan, driven by desire, pursued the nymph Syrinx to the riverbank. The nymph escaped by transforming into a reed, from which Pan carved the first flute for himself. Danish Romantic Carl Nielsen wove this myth into an enchanting tone poem, where French sensuality meets Scandinavian clarity of form. The evening, conducted by Chief Conductor Rumon Gamba, culminates in Ludwig van Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony, a celebration of honour, gentleness and Mother Nature herself. Head start at Restaurant Preludi at 18.00. Discussion of the forthcoming concert. Oulu is the European Capital of Culture in 2026. The Charm of the Flutes is part of the Oulu2026 cultural programme and the cultural climate change initiative. *** Duration about 1 h 50 min (incl. intermission) TIckets 32€ normal / 27 € pensioner / 19 € student, unemployed, child (3--17 yrs) Free entry to the concert for Kaikukortti holders (limited amount, must be purchased in advance from Oulu10 service point).
